I have been inspired by many artists and movements since I first started to paint. Many of these have influenced my work. Perhaps they were necessary diversions. However, my recent work has taken a familiar but very satisfying direction. I realized this while reading Edward Lucie-Smith’s "Late Modern: The Visual Arts Since 1945". Donald Judd was spoken of in a way that felt particularly relevant to me at the moment. One of his pieces was the first significant artwork to make an impact on my young mind living in a small Idaho town. From an image I had made some assumptions as to how ‘Untitled’ might define and activate the space around it. Perhaps making one more aware of the physicality of the piece and oneself. Later in life I was able to experience the piece in person at SFMOMA. Now after trying many different ideas I find myself returning to that which I was first drawn.
